Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift Surgery)

What is blepharoplasty?

Eyelid lift surgery (blepharoplasty) is one of the most commonly performed elective procedures in facial plastic surgery. The goal of the surgery is to enhance the appearance of the aging eyes by recreating the youthful contour of the lid in relation to the eyebrow and cheek.

A blepharoplasty will rejuvenate the upper or lower eyelid areas. Lower lid blepharoplasty can be done two ways. In some patients, an incision is made just below the eyelashes (below). Blepharoplasty incisions generally become quite well hidden after healing has occurred.

In some selected patients, a “transconjunctival” or “incisionless” blepharoplasty can be performed on the inside surface of the lower lid. Of course, an incision is made, but it is hidden from view (below).

Upper lid blepharoplasty involves an incision which is hidden in the upper lid crease (below).

Generally speaking, the results are permanent. However, the effects of time will continue to act, and sometimes the same factors that caused the initial problem (age, family traits) can result in the need for touch-up surgery many years later.

What is the procedure like?

The procedure can be done awake or asleep. Dr. Most can accomodate most patients requests for eyelid surgery anesthesia.

What is the recovery period?

Patients may expect 5-7 days of swelling or bruising in the eyelid/cheek area. Some patients recover more rapidly, some may take a few days longer.
